Dental Implants at Ivy Dental Edinburgh

December 12, 2011

Dental implants offer a permanent solution for your missing teeth.

A dental implant is essentially a substitute for a natural root and commonly it is screw or cylinder shaped. Each implant is placed into a socket carefully drilled at the precise location of the intended tooth. Often the implant can be placed at the same time as removal of the tooth all on the same day.

Dental Implants can be used to replace missing teeth where there are gaps or instead of dentures or bridges.

If you would be interested in finding out more about Dental Implants, and if they would be suitable for you, call us on 0844 387 8333 to arrange an appointment.

Clearstep to a straighter smile!

Clear Brace

Clear braces at Ivy Dental Edinburgh

Are you considering Orthodontics to straighten a crooked or gappy smile but are put off by ‘train track’ braces?

You needn’t be! Here at Ivy Dental in Edinburgh we offer Clearstep clear braces which are hardly visible.

Here’s a little more about them…

ClearStep™
Clearstep is a simple affordable series of clear positioning trays, which gently guide your teeth from their present to the desired position.

How does it work?
Believe it or not your teeth are always moving, albeit minutely. Clearstep exerts gentle pressure upon the tooth/teeth in the direction in which you’d like them to move.

Who does it work for?
Virtually everyone. Provided you are over 14 years of age and your dentist considers you orally fit enough for orthodontic treatment, Clearstep is for you.

So, why Clearstep?
Well, in comparison to existing systems Clearstep is wire free and does away with the need to bond metal onto the teeth. It is invisible, and removable, allowing you, the wearer, to eat that steak dinner, give that public speech, meet that client without embarrassment or discomfort. You simply remove, brush, floss, rinse and reinsert: Clearstep will do the rest.

Contact us on 0844 387 8333 to find out more.

November is National Mouth Cancer Action Month

November 16, 2011

Do you know the signs?

About Mouth Cancer

Around 60,000 people in the UK will be diagnosed with mouth cancer over the next 10 years.

American actor Michael Douglas, BBC Broadcaster Danny Baker and ex England and Manchester United Football Captain Bryan Robson have all suffered from mouth cancer.

Tobacco, smoking or chewing it, is still considered the main cause of mouth cancer. According to the World Health Organisation, up to half of current smokers will die of a tobacco-related illness – including mouth cancer.

Drinking to excess can increase the risk of mouth cancer by four times.  Those who smoke and drink are up to 30 times more likely to develop mouth cancer.

Mouth cancer is twice more common in men than in women.

People over the age of 40 more likely to be diagnosed, though more young people are now being affected than previously.

Poor diet is linked to a third of all cancer cases. Try to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, even more if possible.

Regular visits to Ivy Dental Edinburgh will ensure you are professionally screened for signs of mouth cancer. Talk to us about the process and mouth cancer risk factors.

Like many other cancers self-examination is a simple, and potentially life-saving process.

Look out for:

Ulcers which do not heal within three weeks

Red and white patches in the mouth

Unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth

If you are concerned about any changes within your mouth make an appointment to visit us as soon as possible.

Your dentist can help with Bad Breath

July 8, 2011

Bad breath is a very common problem and there are many different causes. Persistent bad breath is usually caused by the smelly gases released by the bacteria that coat your teeth and gums.

However, strong foods like garlic and onions can add to the problem. Smoking is also one of the main causes of bad breath, along with certain illnesses such as nasal and stomach conditions.

Bits of food that get caught between the teeth and on the tongue will rot and can sometimes cause an unpleasant smell. So correct and regular brushing is very important to keep your breath smelling fresh.

The bacteria on our teeth and gums (plaque) also cause gum disease and dental decay. If you see your dentist regularly this will not only help prevent bad breath but will also let the dentist look for and treat these problems.

“Did you Know?!

June 24, 2011

We thought that you might appreciate some of the following snippets of information!

  • 20% of the population still only brush their teeth once a day
  • 80% of people rarely or never floss their teeth
  • 60% of the population rarely or never visit a hygienist
  • Acid in plaque builds up only seconds after eating sugar but it may take over 30 minutes to return to safe levels
  • Some 250ml cartons of fruit juice contain 30g of sugar – equivalent to almost 7 teaspoons!
  • Regular check ups ensure that your oral health is in great condition and enable us to spot any abnormalities early. This will help reduce the need for further treatment.”

Smile Design

June 17, 2011

When the majority of us look in the mirror, we will see something that we would like to change. Perhaps the colour of our teeth? It could be crooked teeth. It could be the shape of our teeth or our gums. It could be chips or cracks. Whatever the issue, most of us would like to change it.

It’s amazing how much of an effect that our smile can have on our appearance and also how we feel about ourselves. Many of us can spend thousands of pounds on hairdressing, clothes, anti-age creams and make-up, yet it is not always realised how much that teeth can give away our age.

At Ivy Dental  we understand the concern and anxiety that can be caused by an imperfect smile. Many of our patients tell of the huge boost in self-confidence that they have experienced when we have helped deliver an improved smile.

We can use a variety of techniques that may include tooth whitening, orthodontics, crowns, bridges and veneers to achieve the desired result.
